Permabond UV683 is a UV-curing coating material specifically for doming applications — the optimal viscosity for 3D height effects on stickers, labels and smart card logos, also suitable for electronic encapsulation.

With a viscosity of 1,000–1,600 mPa·s, UV683 is medium-viscosity—the ideal consistency for creating 3D doming effects on stickers and labels using surface tension. Due to its viscosity, the adhesive remains centered on the surface being coated and cures to a transparent, tack-free dome.

The second main application is the encapsulation of electronic components with a higher layer thickness than that of the low-viscosity UV681. Both products share the properties of >98% light transmission, Tg 55 °C and wave soldering strength.

APPLICATION PROFILE

UV coating specifically for doming applications — the medium viscosity (1,000–1,600 mPa·s) is ideal for 3D doming effects on stickers, labels, and smart card symbols. Also suitable for encapsulating electronic components.

processing

1
Clean surfaces
Prepare bonding surfaces to be clean, dry, and free of grease — degrease with isopropanol or acetone. For aluminum/copper, lightly sand to remove the oxide layer. Test compatibility on plastics.
2
Apply adhesive thinly
Apply Permabond UV683 thinly and evenly – directly from the bottle or using a dispensing device. Keep the adhesive protected from light. Avoid air bubbles.
3
Adding and aligning components
Quickly and precisely assemble. When bonding glass, spread the adhesive into a thin film by applying pressure. Do not move components during UV curing.
4
Cure with UV light
Point the UV lamp at the adhesive gap. Curing time depends on the lamp power, wavelength, and light transmittance of the components — typically 1–5 seconds for a 30 W/cm² fiber optic system or 5–15 seconds for a 4 mW/cm² low-power lamp.
5
Full strength after UV irradiation
After complete UV curing, the components are immediately ready for handling. Final strength is achieved immediately after irradiation. For dual-cure products (UV + anaerobic), an additional 24 hours are required for complete anaerobic curing of the shaded areas.

Important instructions

Not suitable for / Important notes
Store away from light. The doming effect requires a clean, flat substrate.
storage
Store at 5 to 25 °C and protect from direct sunlight. Curing begins under UV light — keep the bottle in the dark and open only under UV-blocked light.

Frequently asked questions about Permabond UV683

Practical application and design questions — answered by SILITECH.

Permabond UV683 is an acrylate (UV-curing) adhesive with a viscosity of 1,000–1,600 mPa·s. It is used for UV coating applications such as smart cards, stickers, and labels. The adhesive cures upon exposure to UV light in the 320–420 nm spectral range, providing instant curing on demand.

Permabond UV683 cures in the spectral range of 320–420 nm. Standard mercury vapor UV lamps, LED UV lamps with a suitable wavelength, or UV light guide systems are all suitable. For LED lamps, the maximum wavelength of the LED must be matched to the curing spectrum of the adhesive—we are happy to advise you on selecting the right lamp.

Permabond UV683 typically cures in: 7 s with a 4 mW/cm² low-power lamp; 2 s with a 100 mW/cm² LED lamp; 1 s with a 30 W/cm² UV light guide system. The exact curing time depends on the layer thickness and the light transmittance of the components.

Permabond UV683 typically bonds glass, metals, and plastics. For substrate-specific strength values, see the Technical Data Sheet (TDS).

Permabond UV683 is a doming UV coating (electronics/smart cards) (1,000–1,600 mPa·s viscosity, >50% elongation at break). Permabond UV681 is a low-viscosity conformal coating (80–120 mPa·s, >50% elongation at break) — low viscosity for PCB coating.

When stored at 5 to 25 °C and protected from light, Permabond UV683 is stable until the printed expiration date. IMPORTANT: UV adhesives cure upon contact with light — always store the bottle in the dark and only open it briefly under UV-blocked light. Daylight-stable variants (e.g., UV675) can be used briefly under ambient light.

From the Permabond UV range, select according to substrate, viscosity, and special properties: Permabond UV683 (Doming UV coating (electronics/smart card)); Permabond UV681 (low conformal coating); Permabond UV649 (plastic gel); Permabond UV683 (current). For shadowed areas (where UV light does not fully reach the adhesive gap), a dual-cure variant such as Permabond UV7141 (UV + anaerobic) should be used.
