Bluesil · Elkem Silicones ·

Condensation-curing mold-making silicone, specifically for molds used in the serial casting of polyurethane resins. Soft type with a Shore A hardness of 18.

BLUESIL RTV 3318 SPU is a silicone elastomer that cures at room temperature via condensation curing after the addition of the BLUESIL CATA SPU catalyst, forming a flexible, elastic material. It is specifically designed for molds used in the serial casting of polyurethane resins and is also suitable for molds used to cast wax, plaster, or other impression materials. RTV 3318 SPU is the softest type in the series, with a hardness of 18 Shore A. Mixing ratio: 100 parts base to 5 parts CATA SPU.

Resistant to polyurethane

According to TDS, it offers very high resistance to polyurethane resins, even those with strongly exothermic curing. The series is available in three hardnesses: 18, 30, and 35 Shore A. RTV 3318 SPU, at 18 Shore A, is the softest type.

What distinguishes the RTV 3318 SPU

PU-resistant
Very high resistance to polyurethane resins, even under highly exothermic curing conditions.
Soft Type
18 Shore A, the softest of the three hardnesses in the series (18 / 30 / 35 Shore A).
Attention to detail
Excellent reproduction of the finest details.
Good flow properties
Good flow properties facilitate processing.
Self-disconnecting
Easy demolding thanks to the self-releasing properties of silicone.
Good mechanical properties
Tensile strength 2.5 MPa, elongation at break 350%, tear strength 12 kN/m (according to ASTM D412 / D624).

What is the RTV 3318 SPU used for?

PU serial casting
Molds for the serial casting of polyurethane resins.
wax and plaster
Also suitable for molds in which wax, plaster or other molding materials are poured.
Soft impressions
Where a low hardness facilitates the demolding of undercut models.
Detailed models
For models with high demands on detail reproduction.

Processing

1
Mixing
Stir the base and CATA SPU before use. Mix 100 parts RTV 3318 SPU with 5 parts CATA SPU using a slow-speed agitator to limit air contamination.
2
Degas
Degas the catalyzed mixture under vacuum at 30 to 50 mbar. Repeat the process several times, filling the container only one-third full.
3
Prepare and cast the model
Dust the model and prepare it with a pore filler such as soapy water or wax dissolved in xylene to prevent sticking. Pour the mixture directly onto the model, avoiding bubbles and air inclusions.
4
Curing
Cure at 23 °C and 50% relative humidity; do not expose the catalyzed product to temperatures exceeding 50 °C. Demold after 24 hours; for best performance, wait 4 days.

Important Notes

  • Processing is dependent on temperature and humidity. Higher temperature or humidity shortens the pot life. Do not expose the catalyzed product to temperatures above 50 °C during and after curing.
  • Store in the original container below 40 °C for up to 12 months from the date of manufacture. Reseal opened containers.
  • The currently valid Elkem data sheet (TDS and SDS) is authoritative, which we will be happy to send you.
