FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between RTV-1 and RTV-2 silicones?

RTV-1 silicones are one-component, ready-to-use, and cure at room temperature through atmospheric moisture, from the surface inward. Typical applications: sealing, bonding, protection, and assembly. RTV-2 silicones consist of two components (base and hardener), cure throughout the entire cross-section after mixing, and can be specifically selected based on Shore hardness, viscosity, and pot life. They are the standard for mold making, impression taking, potting, and technical molded parts.

Which silicone is suitable for mold making?

For mold making, addition-curing RTV-2 silicones such as the SILISIL MF series or Bluesil RTV 3428/3450 are suitable. The Shore hardness depends on the application: Shore A 20 to 25 for flexible molds with undercuts, Shore A 35 to 45 for standard molds, Shore A 50 and higher for abrasion-resistant molds. In addition, tear strength, viscosity, and pot life are also important. We will verify the selection based on your casting material and the technical data sheets.

Are your silicones food-grade or biocompatible?

Individual products yes, but suitability must always be assessed on a product-specific basis. For applications involving food contact, the platinum-cured SILISIL PP series is designed in accordance with the technical documentation. For medical-adjacent applications such as podiatry and prosthetics, we offer the SILISIL MD series. The products have been tested according to ISO 10993-5/-10/-23 (cytotoxicity, sensitization, skin irritation) for skin contact with intact skin during long-term use exceeding 30 days (manufacturer study 2023). More extensive suitability, such as mucosal or implantation contact, is not covered by these tests. Additionally, we offer Silbione RTV 4411/4420 (health-care grade); specific evidence according to the manufacturer's documentation is available upon request. We review the regulatory requirements of your application based on the technical documents. Certificates and evidence are available upon request.
