Cartridges, containers and connections: choosing the right 2K system
2K materials are usually supplied in double cartridges. For successful dosing and mixing, the cartridge, connection, mixer, and dispensing device must be compatible. This article explains the common systems, their connections, and proper storage.
In a nutshell: the system must fit together
Cartridge, static mixer, and dispensing device form a system from a series. If the system type, volume, and ratio do not match, the mixer will not fit or the material will be incorrectly dosed. Coordinating the three parts avoids misruns.
Dual Cartridge: Two Components, Separated Until the Mixer
In 2K materials, the double cartridge keeps the two components separate. They only meet and mix in the attached static mixer. The mixing ratio is determined by the chamber geometry of the cartridge, so it results from the cartridge itself.
F-System and A-System
Two cartridge standards are common. The F-system is available in standard sizes such as 210 ml and 400 ml, with mixing ratios from 1:1 to 10:1. The A-system covers smaller containers, such as 42 ml cartridges, also in various ratios. The appropriate standard depends on the material, quantity, and ratio.

Connections: Bayonet or Thread
The static mixer is placed onto the cartridge via a connection, usually as a bayonet or thread. The connection must match the cartridge type; otherwise, the mixer will not sit tightly and the ratio at the outlet will be incorrect. Within a series, the cartridge, mixer, and connection are coordinated with one another.
Compatibility: Cartridge, Mixer, and Device
Three components must fit together. The cartridge determines the system, volume, and ratio. The static mixer must match the ratio and connection. The dispensing device must accommodate the cartridge and be designed for its volume and ratio, for example from the Sulzer Mixpac DM2X or DP series. A 10:1 material accordingly requires a 10:1 cartridge, a 10:1 mixer, and a suitable device. The selection of the mixer is covered in a separate article.
Containers and Storage
2K cartridges have a limited shelf life. Storage temperature and shelf life are specified in the data sheet. Store cartridges in a cool, dry place and bring them to room temperature before use. Seal opened cartridges with the cap or the filled mixer and use them within the shelf life. The specifications of the respective data sheet are binding.
