SILIRESIN Biothane

Technical casting resins with renewable raw materials

More sustainable polyurethane casting resins for technical applications

More sustainable raw material concepts are also gaining importance in technical casting resins. With SILIRESIN Biothane, SILITECH offers a family of high-performance polyurethane casting resins in which selected plant-based raw materials are used in the polyol component.

These systems combine the proven properties of modern polyurethane casting resins with a reduced use of fossil raw materials. This makes them suitable for companies that, when selecting materials, want to consider not only the technical requirements but also the origin of the raw materials used.

What is SILIRESIN Biothane?

SILIRESIN Biothane comprises two-component polyurethane casting resins for various technical applications.

The system consists of:

  • the SILIRESIN-Biothane resin component,
  • a specially formulated Biodur hardener.

Depending on the product variant, polyols based on renewable raw materials are used in the resin component. These include, for example, vegetable oils and functional polyols produced from them.

After mixing the resin and hardener, a durable, permanently cross-linked polyurethane is created.

Renewable raw materials in technical casting resins

Conventional polyurethane casting resins are predominantly based on petrochemical raw materials. With SILIRESIN Biothane, some of the usual polyol raw materials are replaced by raw materials of plant origin.

Depending on the formulation, polyols based on, for example, the following are used:

  • Castor oil,
  • Rapeseed oil,
  • Sunflower oil
  • Soybean oil,
  • other vegetable oils

for use.

The proportion of renewable raw materials varies depending on the product and requirements. This allows for the selection of a suitable combination of technical performance, processing properties, and renewable raw material base for different applications.

Combining technical performance and sustainability

The use of renewable raw materials does not mean that compromises have to be made regarding technical performance.

SILIRESIN Biothane systems are specifically formulated for technical potting and molding applications. Depending on the specific variant, different properties are available, for example:

  • good flow properties,
  • defined hardness and elasticity,
  • reliable curing,
  • good electrical insulating properties
  • mechanical load-bearing capacity,
  • Adaptation to different processing times.

This makes the systems suitable for numerous industrial applications where reliable polyurethane potting is required.

Typical areas of application

Depending on the product variant, SILIRESIN Biothane can be used for the following applications, among others:

Electronics potting

Electronic components can be protected from moisture, dust, vibrations, and mechanical stress. The casting resins flow into cavities and reliably encase the components.

Electrical and sensor technology

Systems with suitable electrical and mechanical properties are available for sensors, coils, cable connections and other electrical components.

Technical molded parts

SILIRESIN Biothane is also suitable for the production of technical cast and molded parts. Depending on the formulation, different hardnesses, elasticities, and filler content can be achieved.

Prototypes and small production runs

The two-component systems can be processed flexibly and are therefore also suitable for prototypes, small series and customer-specific components.

The right resin-hardener system

The properties of a polyurethane casting resin arise from the interaction of resin and hardener. Therefore, each SILIRESIN Biothane component is combined with a suitable Biodur hardener.

The following criteria are important for selecting the right system:

  • desired hardness
  • Elasticity or stiffness,
  • Viscosity and flow behavior,
  • Potting and processing time,
  • Curing time,
  • thermal stress,
  • electrical requirements
  • Component geometry and potting volume.

SILITECH assists in selecting a suitable combination for the respective application.

Processing of SILIRESIN Biothane

SILIRESIN Biothane is generally processed in a similar way to other two-component polyurethane casting resins.

The following points are particularly important for a reliable result:

  • Measure the resin and hardener in the prescribed ratio,
  • Mix both components thoroughly and homogeneously,
  • Take into account the specified processing time,
  • Prepare materials and potting components cleanly and dry,
  • Maintain the product-specific processing temperature,
  • Do not put any stress on the material until it has fully hardened.

The exact details regarding mixing ratio, pot life and curing can be found in the respective technical data sheet.

Bio-based and durable

The term "bio-based" describes the origin of some of the raw materials used. In SILIRESIN Biothane, selected components of the polyol component come from renewable plant sources.

After curing, a permanently cross-linked polyurethane is formed. The material is designed for long-term technical applications and combines the advantages of modern casting resin technology with a higher proportion of renewable raw materials.

Advantages of SILIRESIN Biothane

SILIRESIN Biothane offers an interesting solution for companies that want to combine technical requirements with a more conscious choice of raw materials.

The most important advantages:

  • Use of selected renewable raw materials,
  • lower demand for fossil polyol raw materials,
  • proven polyurethane technology,
  • different formulas for different applications,
  • Flexible combination with suitable Biodur hardeners,
  • suitable for technical potting and molding applications,
  • personal consultation by SILITECH.

Which SILIRESIN Biothane is right for your project?

The choice of the appropriate casting resin always depends on the specific application. Hardness, temperature resistance, processing time, component geometry, and other requirements should be considered together.

SILITECH will assist you in selecting the appropriate SILIRESIN Biothane system and the associated Biodur hardener component.
