Safely Curing UV Adhesives: Curing Chamber, Dose, and Process Control
Light-curing adhesives harden in seconds once they receive the correct light at a sufficient dose. This makes them fast and easily controllable, but places demands on the equipment, dose, and process. This article shows you how to cure UV adhesives reliably and safely.
To the point: when is UV curing appropriate?
UV and light-curing adhesives are suitable when the bond line is exposed to light and rapid, controlled curing is required. They only cure upon activation, allowing for extended positioning time. How UV curing works
The adhesive contains a photoinitiator. When light of the appropriate wavelength strikes it, the photoinitiator triggers the cross-linking process, causing the adhesive to harden. The crucial factor is the dose, which is the product of light intensity and exposure time. Too low a dose results in incomplete curing, even if the surface already appears solid. The appropriate wavelength and required dose are specified in the adhesive's data sheet.

For uniform, reproducible curing, a curing chamber, such as the LOCTITE UV curing chamber, is recommended. It exposes the component evenly and from all sides, shields the radiation, and is suitable for batch and series production. Spot and area lamps cure specific areas, for example, on large or permanently installed parts. The choice depends on component size, quantity, and accessibility.
Adjust dose and interval correctly
For the joint to fully cure, the intensity and time must combine to produce the necessary dose. Distance and geometry influence how much light reaches the joint. Intensity and dose can be measured and documented with a radiometer. The target values are taken from the adhesive and equipment data sheets, not from visual inspection.
Shade zones: the limit of UV curing
Light only cures where it reaches it. If the adhesive joint is in shadow or behind opaque material, the adhesive remains liquid there. Solutions include translucent joining partners, a geometry that allows light to reach the joint, or an adhesive with a secondary curing mechanism, such as moisture or anaerobic post-curing. Such shadowed areas must be inspected before series production begins.
Safety when working with UV
UV radiation can damage eyes and skin. A closed curing chamber shields against the radiation. For open lamps, protective goggles, skin protection, and shielding are necessary. Always follow the safety instructions of the device manufacturer.
Ensuring quality
- Determine and document the dose and exposure time.
- Check the curing and adhesion on samples, not just the surface.
- Identify and treat shadow areas separately.
- Comply with the approvals and limit values from the data sheet.

- Insufficient exposure time: the surface is hard, but the depth is not fully hardened.
