Merbenit: MS Polymer Adhesives and Sealants, the Complete Range

Merbenit: MS Polymer Adhesives and Sealants, the Complete Range

Merbenit is the industrial brand of MS polymer-based adhesives and sealants (SMP) from the Swiss manufacturer merz+benteli. The products combine the advantages of silicone and polyurethane: high strength, permanent elasticity, a superior adhesion spectrum, and are free of silicone, solvents, isocyanates, and phthalates. SILITECH stocks the industrial Merbenit range from its Swiss warehouse. This overview presents all types, their properties, and how to select the right one.

In a nutshell

Merbenit products are MS polymer adhesives and sealants (SMP): flexible, with a broad adhesion spectrum, weather-, UV- and moisture-resistant, paintable and low-emission. The product range extends from universal sealants to certified specialty types for railway vehicle construction (EN 45545-2), marine applications (IMO), windshield bonding (FMVSS 212) and food-related applications (ISEGA).

What is Merbenite?

Merbenit is the industrial adhesive and sealant brand of merz+benteli ag, a Swiss manufacturer with roots dating back to 1918 (known, among other things, for the classic Cementit). All Merbenit products are based on the patented merbenTECH-SMP technology, silane-modified polymers, also known internationally as MS polymers or MS hybrids. Merbenit combines high strength and elasticity with a superior adhesion spectrum and high environmental compatibility. SILITECH is the distribution partner for the industrial product range and provides advice on the appropriate type.

MS polymer (SMP): Advantages over silicone and PU

SMP adhesives and sealants combine the positive properties of silicone and polyurethane while avoiding their disadvantages:

  • Wide adhesion spectrum: adheres to a very wide range of substrates, including numerous plastics, often without primer and even on slightly damp surfaces.
  • Permanently elastic: compensates for vibrations and movements, depending on the type with a low modulus for long-lasting joints.
  • Weatherproof, UV and moisture resistant: for indoor and outdoor use.
  • Paintable: compatible with many paints, without wetting problems.
  • Clean and low-emission: free from silicone, solvents, isocyanates and phthalates; many types with EMICODE EC1Plus and Eurofins IAC Gold.

More information on the chemistry can be found under MS polymer (SMP) and on its classification compared to silicone, PU and acrylic under Sealants in comparison.

Merbenite after application

Construction and interior finishing

For joints and elastic bonding in construction, SF50 (permanently elastic, Minergie-ECO certified, fast curing even at low temperatures) and the highly elastic TMS32 (suitable for sanitary applications) are suitable . HM21 serves as a universal sealant , and the transparent TS40 is ideal for discreet interior bonding .

Railway vehicle construction (EN 45545-2)

For fire-rated applications, Merbenit offers two types: the sealant RV30 (Hazard Level HL1+HL2) and the adhesive RV55 (HL3, highest level, approved for use on tunnel vehicles), both without halogenated flame retardants and low in emissions.

Maritime and Transport

In shipbuilding, the maritime MB55 with IMO-FTPC certification is used; for window bonding in vehicle construction, the SK212 (FMVSS 212, travel time 60 minutes) is used.

Industrial and high-temperature

Where maximum strength is required, the high-modulus HS60 is suitable ; for powder coating and thermal coating processes, the heat-resistant PC200 (short-term up to +240 °C) is ideal. For structural, moisture-independent bonding, the 2K types 2K10 and the fast-curing 2K60 are available.

Food-related applications

ISEGA-approved products for use in food contact environments include HS60, HT50 and TMS32.

Which Merbenite for which task?

As a rule of thumb: universal: HM21; highest strength: HS60; quick installation: HT50 or 2K60; transparent: TS40; large-area/sprayable: ST40; fire protection rail: RV30/RV55; high temperature: PC200; marine: MB55; discs: SK212; thick layers/structural: 2K10.

Processing and liability

Merbenit adheres to many substrates without a primer; on critical or particularly smooth surfaces, cleaning and an adhesion promoter are recommended (see Surface Preparation Before Bonding and Primers and Adhesion Promoters). 1K types cure via atmospheric humidity, 2K types cure independently of humidity. Frequently asked questions about Merbenite

What is Merbenit? A Swiss brand of industrial adhesives and sealants based on MS polymer (SMP) from merz+benteli ag, manufactured using the patented merbenTECH technology.

Silicone or Merbenit (MS polymer)? MS polymer is paintable, has a broader adhesion spectrum, and is low-emission; silicone remains superior under extreme temperature or UV exposure. For most construction and industrial bonding applications, Merbenit is the more versatile choice.

Is Merbenit paintable? Yes, MS polymers are compatible with many paints, unlike silicone.

Which Merbenit products are approved for use on railway vehicles? RV30 (sealant, HL1+HL2) and RV55 (adhesive, HL3) according to EN 45545-2.

Does Merbenit adhere without a primer? On many substrates, yes; on critical substrates, a primer improves reliability.
