Potting & Electronic Protection.

Potting compounds and protective coatings shield electronics from moisture, vibration, heat, and various media. Epoxy, polyurethane, or silicone: the right choice determines protection, heat dissipation, processing, and repairability.

overview

Basics

In potting and encapsulation, a curing resin encases the assembly and protects it from environmental influences. Epoxy resins offer high strength as well as chemical and temperature resistance, but are hard and difficult to repair. Polyurethanes are tough, elastic, and impact-resistant, ideal for mechanically stressed potting applications. Silicone potting compounds are permanently elastic, temperature and UV stable, low-stress, and sometimes repairable, making them the first choice for electronics subjected to temperature fluctuations. Thermally conductive types are available for thermal management. Thin conformal coatings protect printed circuit boards across their entire surface while being lightweight. The selection criteria include the mixing ratio, pot life, exothermicity, shrinkage, and the required electrical properties; the technical data sheet is binding.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Epoxy, silicone or polyurethane, which should I choose?

Epoxy offers high strength and resistance to various media, polyurethane is suitable for tough-elastic, impact-resistant potting compounds, and silicone is ideal for electronics exposed to temperature fluctuations and UV radiation with low mechanical stress and partial repairability. The final suitability will be determined by the technical data sheet and testing on the actual component.

What does thermally conductive mean?

These potting compounds contain fillers that dissipate heat from components, specified as thermal conductivity in W/mK. Higher values mean better heat dissipation, usually at the expense of viscosity and elasticity. The value for the specific product is given in the technical data sheet.

Conformal coating or full potting?

Coating for lightweight, repairable basic protection against moisture at minimal weight. Full encapsulation when maximum protection against media and vibration is required and the additional weight is acceptable.
