Permabond A905 is a surface activator for use with anaerobic Permabond adhesives (A011, A113, A130, etc.) — accelerates curing on inactive surfaces and improves gap curing with coarse tolerances.

Anaerobic adhesives cure in the absence of air and in contact with metal — this works quickly on copper and steel, but on inactive surfaces such as stainless steel, zinc, or aluminum, curing can be significantly slowed. A905 is applied to one of the two bonding surfaces, allowed to flash off well, and then provides a thin activating film.

The high evaporation rate (7.7 × butyl acetate) ensures rapid flash-off — no waiting time required. A905 additionally improves gap curing in coarse tolerances where anaerobic curing itself would only progress slowly. Available as a liquid and as a spray (A 905 Spray).

What sets Permabond A905 apart

Accelerates anaerobic curing
Reduces cure time on inactive surfaces such as stainless steel, zinc, and aluminum.
Improves gap curing
For coarse tolerances, where the adhesive itself would only cure slowly.
Rapid evaporation
Evaporation rate 7.7 × butyl acetate — short flash-off time.
Low residue
Leaves only a very slight residue on the surface after flashing off.
Easy application
Apply with a cloth, by dipping, or by spraying.
Universal with all Permabond A adhesives
Compatible with the entire anaerobic Permabond range.

What is Permabond A905 used for?

Stainless steel bonding
Accelerates curing on inactive stainless steel surfaces.
Zinc surfaces
Galvanized screws and components.
Aluminum bonding
Accelerate the curing of anaerobic adhesives on aluminum.
Coarse tolerances
Improves gap curing at gap widths at the upper limit.
Low ambient temperatures
When temperature slows down anaerobic curing.

Processing

1
Clean the bonding surface
Prepare both surfaces to be bonded clean, dry, and free of grease — ideally degrease with Permabond Cleaner A.
2
Apply activator thinly
Apply Permabond A905 thinly and evenly to ONE of the two bonding surfaces — with a clean cloth, by dipping, or as a spray.
3
Allow to flash off
The activator evaporates quickly and leaves a thin active film. Allow to flash off completely before applying the anaerobic adhesive.
4
Apply anaerobic adhesive
Apply the Permabond A adhesive (e.g., A011, A113, A130) to the UNTREATED bonding surface. Never mix activator and adhesive directly.
5
Join components and allow to cure
Assemble the components — anaerobic curing begins in the absence of air and upon contact with metal. Handling strength is typically achieved after 15 minutes, with full strength after 24 hours.

Important Notes

Not suitable for / Important notes
A905 NEVER mix directly with anaerobic adhesive or pour back into its bottle — this leads to premature curing. Apply only to one side of the bonding surfaces, allow to flash off, then apply the adhesive to the untreated side. Contains solvents — when used on plastics, check compatibility before series use. Flash point −4 °C — fire hazard.
Storage
Store at 5 to 25 °C. Anaerobic adhesives lose their reactivity upon contact with metal — do not touch the tip of the bottle to metal surfaces, and do not pour adhesive back into the bottle.

Frequently asked questions about Permabond A905

Practical application and design questions — answered by SILITECH.

Permabond A905 is a surface activator for use with anaerobic Permabond adhesives — accelerates curing on inactive surfaces such as stainless steel, zinc, or aluminum and improves through-cure in gap-filling applications with coarse tolerances. Surface activator for anaerobic adhesives — accelerates curing on inactive surfaces.

Apply A905 thinly and evenly to ONE of the two bonding surfaces. Allow to flash off completely (a few seconds to minutes). Then apply the anaerobic adhesive to the UNTREATED bonding surface. Activator and adhesive must not be mixed directly — this will lead to premature curing.

A905 is compatible with the entire anaerobic Permabond A-series — threadlockers (A011, A113, A126, A130, A025, A131, A134, A118), shaft-hub adhesives (A1042, A1046, A1062), thread sealants (A129, A1044, A1058) and flange sealants (A136). A905 has no activating effect on other adhesive types (cyanoacrylates, epoxides, UV acrylates).

A905 is particularly worthwhile on inactive surfaces — stainless steel, zinc (galvanized steel), aluminum, and some coatings. On steel, copper, and their alloys, anaerobic curing is already fast without an activator. Its use is also advisable at low ambient temperatures or with large bond gaps.

Permabond offers A905 as a liquid (for high processing volumes, dipping, cloth application) and as A 905 Spray (aerosol, for selective or hard-to-reach areas). The chemistry is identical — the choice depends on the application method.

When stored correctly at 5 to 25 °C, A905 remains stable until the printed expiration date. As the product contains solvents, keep the bottle tightly closed — otherwise evaporation will occur and effectiveness will diminish.

A905 contains solvents (flash point −4 °C) — fire and flash fire hazard. Use only in well-ventilated areas, keep away from open flames, sparks, and hot surfaces. Avoid eye and skin contact; refer to the SDS for complete safety data.
