RTV-2 Silicones. Two-component silicones for mold making, medical technology, and industry

RTV-2 silicones (Room Temperature Vulcanizing, two-component) consist of a base component and a hardener that, after mixing, vulcanize at room temperature into a permanently elastic silicone elastomer. They are the standard material for mold making, impression taking, prototyping , and industrial potting. Selection is based on Shore hardness, viscosity, tear strength, elongation, pot life, and curing time.

Addition curing or condensation curing

Addition-curing silicones (platinum-catalyzed) offer high dimensional accuracy and low shrinkage (below 0.1% according to manufacturer documentation). Depending on the product, applications involving skin or food contact are possible; the manufacturer's product-specific certifications are decisive. Typical fields of application: precision molding, medical devices, food industry. Typical products: Bluesil RTV 141, RTV 3428, RTV 3450, SILISIL MF series.

Condensation-curing silicones are more cost-effective and easy to process. They are suitable for large molds, construction applications, and impressions without strict dimensional accuracy requirements. Typical products: Bluesil RTV 3221, RTV 3325, SILISIL PC series.

SILISIL. Mold-making silicones from the SILITECH own brand

The own brand SILISIL comprises over 40 mold-making silicones in six series: MF (mold-making, addition-curing), PC (condensation-curing), PP (platinum, food-contact types according to documentation), MD (medical/podiatry), PRO (Professional Casting) and RP (Rapid Prototyping). Hardnesses from Shore 00-10 to Shore A 70.

Elkem Bluesil and Silbione in the product range

SILITECH offers a broad RTV-2 program from Elkem Bluesil: from low-viscosity casting silicones (RTV 3428, viscosity 12,000 mPa·s according to data sheet) to self-leveling potting compounds and high-viscosity kneading silicones. For medical applications, the Silbione series (RTV 4411, 4420) is available; suitability and certifications are available on request, product-specific.

Areas of application

RTV-2 silicones are used in architectural model making, in prosthetics and podiatry, in potting of electronic assemblies, in aerospace and in tool and mold making. Depending on the type, temperature resistance ranges from -60 °C to +250 °C (according to the technical data sheet).
