Cartridges, containers and connections: choosing the right 2K system
Two-component materials usually come in dual cartridges. For successful dispensing and mixing, the cartridge, connection, mixer, and device must be compatible. This article explains the common systems, their connections, and proper storage.
To sum it up: the system must fit together
The cartridge, static mixer, and dispensing device form a system. If the system type, volume, and ratio are not compatible, the mixer will not fit or the material will be dispensed incorrectly. Matching these three components prevents these problems.
Dual cartridge: two components, separated up to the mixer
With two-component materials, the dual cartridge keeps the two components separate. They only come together and are mixed in the attached static mixer. The mixing ratio is determined by the chamber geometry of the cartridge; it is therefore inherent to the cartridge itself.
F-system and A-system
Two cartridge standards are commonly used. The F-system is available in standard sizes such as 210 ml and 400 ml, and in ratios from 1:1 to 10:1. The A-system covers smaller containers, such as 42 ml cartridges, also in various ratios. Which standard is suitable depends on the material, quantity, and ratio.
| system | Typical volumes | Typical conditions |
|---|---|---|
| F-System | 210 ml, 400 ml | 1:1, 2:1, 10:1 |
| A-System | 42 ml and smaller | including 4:1 |
Connections: Bayonet or threaded
The static mixer is attached to the cartridge via a connection, usually a bayonet or threaded fitting. The connection must be compatible with the cartridge type; otherwise, the mixer will not seal properly, and the flow rate at the outlet will be incorrect. Within a given product line, the cartridge, mixer, and connection are all designed to work together.
Compatibility: Cartridge, mixer and device
Three parts must fit together. The cartridge determines the system, volume, and ratio. The static mixer must be compatible with the ratio and connection. The dispensing unit must accommodate the cartridge and be designed for its volume and ratio, for example, from the Sulzer Mixpac DM2X or DP series. A 10:1 material therefore requires a 10:1 cartridge, a 10:1 mixer, and a suitable dispensing unit. Mixer selection is covered in a separate article.
Packaging and storage
2K cartridges have a limited shelf life. Storage temperature and shelf life are specified in the data sheet. Store cartridges in a cool, dry place and bring them to room temperature before use. Seal opened cartridges with the cap or the filled mixer and use within the expiration date. The information in the respective data sheet is binding.
Accesories
- Static mixer suitable for system and ratio.
- Caps for opened cartridges.
- Piston and adapter for the discharge device.
- Cleaning materials for equipment and workplace.
Typical mistakes
- The mixer or device is not compatible with the cartridge system.
- The ratio of cartridge to mixer is incorrect.
- Cartridge not preheated before use.
- Partially used cartridge stored for too long.
- Incorrect connection type selected.
We will gladly clarify which combination of cartridge, mixer and device is suitable for your material based on the data sheet.
