Permabond UV649 is a thixotropic UV-curing gel for plastics — designed for vertical applications, higher layer thicknesses and dual function as a sealant, with highest polycarbonate strength.

With a pressure of 20,000–30,000 mPa·s and thixotropic behavior up to 150,000 mPa·s, UV649 does not drip and reliably fills large gaps. Its high curing depth allows for the bonding of thicker layers—UV649 can also be used as a UV-curing sealant.

Polycarbonate bonding leads to substrate failure exceeding 9 N/mm². PC/ABS blends achieve substrate failure of 7 N/mm². This makes UV649 the strongest plastic UV bond in the Permabond range.

SPECIAL FEATURE

Thixotropic UV-cured polymer gel with high curing depth — also suitable for use as a sealant. Highest polycarbonate strength (>9 N/mm² substrate failure) for vertical applications. Low flow tendency — precise application possible.

processing

1
Clean surfaces
Prepare bonding surfaces to be clean, dry, and free of grease — degrease with isopropanol or acetone. For aluminum/copper, lightly sand to remove the oxide layer. Test compatibility on plastics.
2
Apply adhesive thinly
Apply Permabond UV649 thinly and evenly – directly from the bottle or using a dispensing device. Keep the adhesive protected from light. Avoid air bubbles.
3
Adding and aligning components
Quickly and precisely assemble. When bonding glass, spread the adhesive into a thin film by applying pressure. Do not move components during UV curing.
4
Cure with UV light
Point the UV lamp at the adhesive gap. Curing time depends on the lamp power, wavelength, and light transmittance of the components — typically 1–5 seconds for a 30 W/cm² fiber optic system or 5–15 seconds for a 4 mW/cm² low-power lamp.
5
Full strength after UV irradiation
After complete UV curing, the components are immediately ready for handling. Final strength is achieved immediately after irradiation. For dual-cure products (UV + anaerobic), an additional 24 hours are required for complete anaerobic curing of the shaded areas.

Frequently asked questions about Permabond UV649

Practical application and design questions — answered by SILITECH.

Permabond UV649 is a methacrylic acid ester (UV-curing, long-wavelength) adhesive with a viscosity of 20,000–30,000 mPa·s @ 20 rpm / 80,000–150,000 mPa·s @ 2.5 rpm (thixotropic). This thixotropic polymer UV gel can also be used as a sealant and offers a high cure depth. The adhesive cures upon irradiation with UV light in the spectral range of 365–420 nm—curing in seconds "on demand".

Permabond UV649 cures in the spectral range of 365–420 nm. Standard mercury vapor UV lamps, LED UV lamps with a suitable wavelength, or UV light guide systems are all suitable. For LED lamps, the maximum wavelength of the LED must be matched to the curing spectrum of the adhesive—we are happy to advise you on selecting the right lamp.

The UV curing of Permabond UV649 depends on the lamp power, wavelength, and light transmittance of the components. Typical curing times range from seconds to a few minutes.

Permabond UV649 reliably bonds: Polycarbonate: >9 N/mm² (substrate failure); Acrylic: >1.5 N/mm² (SV); PVC: >5 N/mm² (SV). For thermoplastic substrates, we recommend testing compatibility before series production — release agents on injection-molded parts can impair adhesion.

Permabond UV649 is a UV adhesive for plastics — thixotropic gel (suitable for sealants) (20,000–30,000 mPa·s @ 20 rpm / 80,000–150,000 mPa·s @ 2.5 rpm (thixotropic) viscosity, >70% elongation at break). Permabond UV645 is high viscosity (8,000–10,000 mPa·s, >70% elongation at break) — lower viscosity.

When stored at 5 to 25 °C and protected from light, Permabond UV649 is stable until the printed expiration date. IMPORTANT: UV adhesives cure upon contact with light — always store the bottle in the dark and only open it briefly under UV-blocked light. Daylight-stable variants (e.g., UV675) can be used briefly under ambient light.

From the Permabond UV range, select according to substrate, viscosity, and special properties: Permabond UV649 (UV adhesive for plastics — thixotropic gel (suitable for sealant)); Permabond UV645 (high viscosity); Permabond UV648 (high viscosity urethane); Permabond UV640 (medium viscosity). For shadowed areas (where UV light does not fully reach the adhesive gap), a dual-cure variant such as Permabond UV7141 (UV + anaerobic) should be used.
