Permabond UV681 is a UV-curing conformal coating material — specifically for smart card microchips and electronic components for coating against environmental influences, shock and wave soldering stress.

Unlike adhesives, UV681 is a UV-curing coating material—it protects electronic components under a transparent, tack-free surface. Its low viscosity (80–120 mPa·s) ensures uniform, bubble-free coatings.

The high temperature resistance (glass transition temperature 55 °C, heat-resistant during wave soldering) and the >98% light transmittance make UV681 the ideal choice for smart card encapsulation, LED protection, and general electronic protective coatings. The extended curing spectrum of 320–420 nm also allows curing with conventional UV lamps.

processing

1
Clean surfaces
Prepare bonding surfaces to be clean, dry, and free of grease — degrease with isopropanol or acetone. For aluminum/copper, lightly sand to remove the oxide layer. Test compatibility on plastics.
2
Apply adhesive thinly
Apply Permabond UV681 thinly and evenly – directly from the bottle or using a dispensing device. Keep the adhesive protected from light. Avoid air bubbles.
3
Adding and aligning components
Quickly and precisely assemble. When bonding glass, spread the adhesive into a thin film by applying pressure. Do not move components during UV curing.
4
Cure with UV light
Point the UV lamp at the adhesive gap. Curing time depends on the lamp power, wavelength, and light transmittance of the components — typically 1–5 seconds for a 30 W/cm² fiber optic system or 5–15 seconds for a 4 mW/cm² low-power lamp.
5
Full strength after UV irradiation
After complete UV curing, the components are immediately ready for handling. Final strength is achieved immediately after irradiation. For dual-cure products (UV + anaerobic), an additional 24 hours are required for complete anaerobic curing of the shaded areas.

Important instructions

Not suitable for / Important notes
Conformal coating, not an adhesive in the traditional sense — protects components but does not bond materials together. Store away from light.
storage
Store at 5 to 25 °C and protect from direct sunlight. Curing begins under UV light — keep the bottle in the dark and open only under UV-blocked light.

Frequently asked questions about Permabond UV681

Practical application and design questions — answered by SILITECH.

Permabond UV681 is an acrylate (UV-curing) adhesive with a viscosity of 80–120 mPa·s. It provides conformal UV coating for smart cards and electronics, offering surface-dry protection. The adhesive cures upon exposure to UV light in the 320–420 nm spectral range, enabling instant curing on demand.

Permabond UV681 cures in the spectral range of 320–420 nm. Standard mercury vapor UV lamps, LED UV lamps with a suitable wavelength, or UV light guide systems are all suitable. For LED lamps, the maximum wavelength of the LED must be matched to the curing spectrum of the adhesive—we are happy to advise you on selecting the right lamp.

Permabond UV681 typically cures in: 15 s with a 4 mW/cm² low-power lamp; 2 s with a 100 mW/cm² LED lamp; 1 s with a 30 W/cm² UV light guide system. The exact curing time depends on the layer thickness and the light transmittance of the components.

Permabond UV681 typically bonds glass, metals, and plastics. See TDS for substrate-specific strength values.

Permabond UV681 is a conformal UV coating (electronics) (80–120 mPa·s viscosity, >50% elongation at break). Permabond UV683 is a doming coating (1,000–1,600 mPa·s, >50% elongation at break) — higher viscosity for doming.

When stored at 5 to 25 °C and protected from light, Permabond UV681 is stable until the printed expiration date. IMPORTANT: UV adhesives cure upon contact with light — always store the bottle in the dark and only open it briefly under UV-blocked light. Daylight-stable variants (e.g., UV675) can be used briefly under ambient light.

From the Permabond UV range, select according to substrate, viscosity, and special properties: Permabond UV681 (Conformal Coating UV coating (electronics)); Permabond UV683 (Doming Coating); Permabond UV7220 (Cationic Epoxy); Permabond UV630 (Biocompatible plastics). For shaded areas (where UV light does not fully reach the adhesive gap), a dual-cure variant such as Permabond UV7141 (UV + Anaerobic) should be used.
