Permabond 820 is a high-temperature resistant ethyl cyanoacrylate adhesive with additional cytotoxicity testing — the biocompatible representative of the 800 series for medical and hygienic bonding applications.

With a viscosity of 100 mPa·s, 820 is low-viscosity and fills gaps up to 0.15 mm. Its handling strength on steel, Buna-N, and phenol is 10 to 15 seconds—comparable to the other high-temperature variants in the series.

What distinguishes 820 from 801/802/825 is its successful cytotoxicity testing—a fundamental biological safety test for materials that come into contact with the body. This qualifies 820 for applications with product hygiene requirements. The steel tensile strength of 19–23 N/mm² and the high-temperature formulation remain unchanged.

SPECIAL FEATURE

What is Permabond 820 used for?

Medical and hygiene-related adhesives
Cytotoxicity tested — qualified for applications involving skin contact or hygiene-related requirements.
pharmaceutical and packaging industry
Bonding of components with product hygiene-relevant requirements.
Components near heat sources
High-temperature suitability for devices and machines with increased operating temperatures.
General industrial assembly
Standard adhesives when biocompatible behavior is also required.
Multi-specified bonding
When a cyanoacrylate needs to be both heat and biocompatibility tested.

processing

1
Clean surfaces
Bonding surfaces must be clean, dry, and free of grease. Degrease with acetone or isopropanol. Lightly sand aluminum, copper, and their alloys to remove the oxide layer.
2
Use adhesive sparingly
Apply Permabond 820 only drop by drop to an adhesive surface — the thin layer is crucial for rapid curing.
3
assembling components
Quickly and correctly align the parts. Apply enough pressure so that the adhesive spreads into a thin film.
4
Secure until firmly in place
Do not disturb or realign until handling strength is reached (typically a few seconds to one minute, depending on the substrate). Final strength is reached after 24 hours.
5
Remove adhesive residue
Excess adhesive can be removed with Permabond CA Solvent 2, nitromethane or acetone.

Important instructions

Not suitable for / Important notes
For porous or difficult surfaces, Permabond CSA activator is recommended. Permabond POP primer is mandatory before bonding PP, PE, PTFE, or silicone. Passing cytotoxicity testing does not replace full medical device certification—application-specific testing is required before serial use.
storage
Store refrigerated at 2 to 7 °C. Allow the bottle to warm to room temperature before opening – this prevents condensation and protects the shelf life.

Frequently asked questions about Permabond 820

Practical application and design questions — answered by SILITECH.

Permabond 820 is an ethyl cyanoacrylate instant adhesive with a viscosity of 100 mPa·s and a maximum gap filling capacity of 0.15 mm. This high-temperature cyanoacrylate adhesive is biocompatible, low-viscosity, and widely applicable.

Permabond 820 reliably bonds steel (19–23 N/mm²), as well as Buna-N rubber and similar elastomers. For polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE), PTFE, and silicone, pretreatment with Permabond Polyolefin Primer (POP) is required.

Permabond 820 has passed cytotoxicity testing approved — qualified for demanding industrial applications.

Permabond 820 reaches handling strength on steel in 10–15 seconds. Other typical curing times: 10–15 seconds (Buna N), 10–15 seconds (Phenol). The final strength of 19–23 N/mm² (steel) is reached after 24 hours. Temperature, humidity, and substrate affect the curing rate.

Permabond 820 offers a viscosity of 100 mPa·s, a gap filling capacity of 0.15 mm, and a shear strength of 19–23 N/mm² on steel. Permabond 801 has a viscosity of 10–15 mPa·s, a gap filling capacity of 0.05 mm, and a shear strength of 19–23 N/mm² on steel (ultra-low wicking). Both utilize an ethyl cyanoacrylate base (or a related cyanoacrylate variant).

Permabond 820 should be stored unopened refrigerated at 2 to 7 °C and is stable until the printed expiration date. Allow the bottle to warm to room temperature before opening—this prevents condensation inside, which would reduce its shelf life. Opened bottles remain functional for several months if stored correctly, although the curing rate may decrease over time. We recommend a test bond to check reactivity before critical production applications.

From the Permabond cyanoacrylate range, select according to viscosity and special properties: Permabond 820 (100 mPa·s, 0.15 mm gap width, biocompatible); Permabond 801 (10–15 mPa·s, 0.05 mm, ultra-low viscosity, wicking); Permabond 802 (90–110 mPa·s, 0.15 mm, medium viscosity, high temperature); Permabond 825 (100–150 mPa·s, 0.15 mm, premium 180 °C / 1,000 h). For polypropylene, polyethylene, PTFE, and silicone, pretreatment with Permabond Polyolefin Primer (POP) is always required.
