PERMABOND A118
PERMABOND A118
Permabond · Permabond Engineering Adhesives Ltd ·

Permabond A118 is a high-strength anaerobic universal adhesive — designed for permanent bonding and sealing of metal parts such as bearings, gears, screws and other threaded connections with the highest torque requirements.

With a viscosity of 400 mPa·s, A118 is medium-viscosity and fills gaps up to 0.12 mm. Its high shear strength of 21 MPa and enormous torques (33 N·m breakaway, 58 N·m further) qualify the product for the most demanding anaerobic bonding applications.

The WRAS approval also permits direct contact with drinking water — a rare combination for high-strength adhesives. Excellent chemical resistance, vibration resistance, and corrosion resistance make A118 the universal choice for permanent machine and plant assembly.

SPECIAL FEATURE

Highest torques in the Permabond A series — 33 N·m breakaway torque, 58 N·m holding torque and 21 MPa shear strength. The universal choice for permanent, high-stress bonding of bearings, gears and bolted connections.

What distinguishes Permabond A118

Highest torque in the A-series
33 N·m breakaway strength / 58 N·m further strength — no other Permabond A adhesive achieves these values.
21 MPa shear strength
High-strength shear and tensile loads — permanent machine assembly.
Universal application
Bearings, gears, screw connections — one solution for multiple bonding types.
WRAS approved for potable water
Direct contact with drinking water permitted.
Vibration and corrosion resistant
Secures connections under dynamic and chemical stress.
UV fluorescence
Curing can be checked using UV light.

What is Permabond A118 used for?

Bearing assembly
Bonding of rolling and sliding bearings in shafts and housings.
Gear and shaft-hub connections
Continuous, high-stress torque transmission.
High-strength threadlocker
If classic threadlockers were too weak.
Potable water systems
High-strength bonding with WRAS approval.
Industrial permanent assembly
Mechanical and plant engineering, permanent bonding.

Processing

1
Clean surfaces
Bonding surfaces must be clean, dry, and free of grease. Degrease with Permabond Cleaner A or a solvent (acetone, isopropanol). Rough surfaces (~25 µm) result in higher bond strength than polished ones.
2
Apply adhesive
Apply Permabond A118 directly from the bottle — for through holes, apply a stripe along the thread length; for blind holes, apply a few drops to the bottom. Do not touch the tip to metal surfaces (this will cause premature hardening in the bottle).
3
Joining components
Insert the screws and tighten to the desired torque. For shaft-hub fits, assemble the components before the adhesive begins to cure.
4
Allow to cure
Anaerobic curing begins in the absence of air and upon contact with metal. Handling strength is typically achieved after 15 minutes, functional strength after 1 hour, and full strength after 24 hours at 23 °C.
5
Accelerate curing (optional)
On inactive surfaces (stainless steel, zinc, aluminum) or at low temperatures, Permabond A905 activator can be used — apply to one bonding surface, allow to flash off, then apply adhesive to the other side.

Important Notes

Not suitable for / Important notes
Heating the connection is recommended for disassembly. Not for contact with oxygen or steam. Some thermoplastics may be damaged.
Storage
Store at 5 to 25 °C. Anaerobic adhesives lose their reactivity upon contact with metal — do not touch the tip of the bottle to metal surfaces, and do not pour adhesive back into the bottle.

Frequently asked questions about Permabond A118

Practical application and design questions — answered by SILITECH.

Permabond A118 is a single-component, anaerobic acrylic adhesive with a viscosity of 400 mPa·s and a gap-filling capacity of up to 0.12 mm. It is a high-strength, universal threadlocker offering the highest torque ratings in the Permabond A series. Anaerobic adhesives cure in the absence of air and in contact with metal, making them ideal for tight-tolerance metallic joints.

Anaerobic adhesives like Permabond A118 remain liquid in the bottle (due to contact with air and oxygen) and only begin to harden after bonding under anaerobic conditions and metal-to-metal contact. Curing starts at the metal surface and progresses into the bond gap. The product cures quickly on steel and copper; on stainless steel and zinc, the Permabond A905 activator may be beneficial.

Difficult to remove — Permabond A118 is high-strength (33 N·m breakaway torque). Disassembly typically requires heating the bond to 200 °C or more. Designed for permanent bonding.

Permabond A118 is approved according to WRAS drinking water regulations . These certifications qualify the product for the specified applications — such as direct contact with drinking water in the case of WRAS and KTW approvals.

Permabond A118 typically reaches handling strength after 15 minutes and functional strength after 1 hour at 23 °C on M10 steel. Final strength is reached after 24 hours. On inactive surfaces (stainless steel, zinc) or at low temperatures, the curing time is extended—Permabond A905 activator accelerates the process.

Permabond A118 is a high-strength universal threadlocker (400 mPa·s viscosity, 0.12 mm gap filling, 33 N·m breakaway torque). Permabond A134 is a high-strength paste (paste, 0.5 mm gap filling, 30 N·m breakaway torque). Both belong to the anaerobic Permabond A series.

The choice depends on the application: Permabond A118 (high-strength universal threadlocker); Permabond A134 (high-strength paste); Permabond A025 (high-temperature high-strength); Permabond HH131 (high-temperature + gas/drinking water). For inactive surfaces (stainless steel, zinc, aluminum), Permabond A905 activator be used to accelerate curing.
