Permabond A131 is a premium methacrylate ester-based thread sealant — one of the world's most comprehensive anaerobic approvals with KIWA Gas, KIWA Hot/Cold Water, KIWA Hydrogen, and WRAS Drinking Water. The universal choice for demanding building services engineering.

Unlike conventional acrylic anaerobic sealants, A131 utilizes methacrylate ester chemistry and was specifically developed for use as a multi-media thread sealant. Its white paste consistency does not drip from vertical threads.

KIWA certification covers gas (Gastec), drinking water (both hot and cold), and hydrogen (H₂) — a combination unmatched by any other anaerobic thread sealant at this depth. The additional WRAS approval allows for use with drinking water up to 85 °C. Medium torque values (breakaway 10 N·m, further 7 N·m) permit subsequent disassembly for maintenance — important in utility and plant engineering.

PREMIUM LICENSES

One of the world's most comprehensive anaerobic approvals — KIWA Gastec (gas), KIWA Water (hot and cold drinking water), KIWA Hydrogen (hydrogen), plus WRAS for drinking water up to 85 °C. Permabond A131 is the premium choice for multi-media fittings in building services engineering.

processing

1
Clean surfaces
Bonding surfaces must be clean, dry, and free of grease. Degrease with Permabond Cleaner A or a solvent (acetone, isopropanol). Rough surfaces (~25 µm) result in higher bond strength than polished surfaces.
2
Apply adhesive
Apply Permabond A131 directly from the bottle — for through holes, apply a stripe along the thread length; for blind holes, apply a few drops to the bottom. Do not touch the tip to metal surfaces (this will cause premature hardening in the bottle).
3
assembling components
Insert the screws and tighten them to the required torque. For shaft-hub fits, assemble the components before the adhesive begins to cure.
4
Allow to harden
Anaerobic curing begins in the absence of air and in contact with metal. Handling strength is typically achieved after 15 minutes, functional strength after 1 hour, and full strength after 24 hours at 23 °C.
5
Accelerate curing (optional)
Permabond A905 activator can be used on inactive surfaces (stainless steel, zinc, aluminum) or at low temperatures — applied to one adhesive surface, allowed to evaporate, then adhesive applied to the other side.

Important instructions

Not suitable for / Important notes
Not for use in pure oxygen or vapor environments. Methacrylate chemistry — test compatibility with substrates before series production. Use A905 activator on inactive surfaces.
storage
Store at 5 to 25 °C. Anaerobic adhesives lose their reactivity upon contact with metal — do not touch the tip of the bottle to metal surfaces, do not pour the adhesive back into the bottle.

Frequently asked questions about Permabond A131

Practical application and design questions — answered by SILITECH.

Permabond A131 is a methacrylate ester (anaerobic) with a paste consistency (thixotropic) and a viscosity suitable for gaps up to 0.5 mm. It is a premium thread sealant with multi-approval certifications – KIWA Gas + Hot/Cold Drinking Water + Hydrogen + WRAS. Anaerobic adhesives cure in the absence of air and in contact with metal – ideal for tight-tolerance metallic joints.

Anaerobic adhesives like Permabond A131 remain liquid in the bottle (due to contact with air and oxygen) and only begin to harden after bonding under anaerobic conditions and metal-to-metal contact. Curing starts at the metal surface and progresses into the bond gap. The product cures quickly on steel and copper; on stainless steel and zinc, the Permabond A905 activator may be beneficial.

Yes — Permabond A131 is a thread sealant with moderate torque (10 N·m) and can be removed with standard tools. Designed for maintenance of pipe connections.

Permabond A131 is approved according to KIWA Gastec (Gas), KIWA Water (Warm & Cold drinking), KIWA Hydrogen, and WRAS Drinking Water Approval (hot and cold up to 85 °C) . These certifications qualify the product for the respective specified applications—such as direct contact with drinking water in the case of WRAS and KTW approvals.

Permabond A131 typically reaches handling strength after 15 minutes and functional strength after 1 hour at 23 °C on M10 steel. Final strength is reached after 24 hours. On inactive surfaces (stainless steel, zinc) or at low temperatures, the curing time is extended—Permabond A905 activator accelerates the process.

Permabond A131 is a premium methacrylate thread sealant for use with gas, drinking water, and hydrogen (paste consistency (thixotropic), 0.5 mm gap filling, 10 N·m breakaway torque). Permabond A129 is a medium-strength gel (gel, 0.5 mm, 12 N·m breakaway torque) using acrylic chemistry instead of methacrylate. Both belong to the anaerobic Permabond A series.

The choice depends on the application: Permabond A131 (premium thread sealant methacrylate — gas, drinking water, hydrogen); Permabond A129 (medium strength gel); Permabond A1058 (high viscosity paste); Permabond LH050 (low strength paste). For inactive surfaces (stainless steel, zinc, aluminum), Permabond A905 activator be used to accelerate curing.
