Permabond · Permabond Engineering Adhesives Ltd · SKU 49-221.FL

Permabond A136 is an anaerobic surface gasket — specifically for flange, housing and flat gaskets between metal components. It ensures metal-to-metal contact with uniform stress distribution and without volume loss.

Unlike conventional threadlockers or shaft-hub adhesives, A136 is optimized for flat surfaces — flanges, housing covers, pump bodies. Its paste consistency means it does not drip, creep, or shrink upon curing.

The bond creates direct metal-to-metal contact with a minimal adhesive gap—important for torque transmission and heat conduction. Gap filling up to 0.5 mm covers larger tolerances. WRAS approval also permits contact with drinking water.

SPECIAL FEATURE

Anaerobic surface and flange gasket — the Permabond specialist for flat sealing surfaces between metal components. No creep, no shrinkage, ensures metal-to-metal contact with minimal gaps. WRAS-approved for drinking water applications.

What distinguishes Permabond A136

Flange and flat gasket
Specifically designed for flat sealing surfaces between metal components.
No creeping, no shrinking
Dimensionally stable — the adhesive bond does not change after curing.
Metal/metal contact with minimal gap
Direct mechanical contact, uniform voltage distribution.
0.5 mm gap filling
For coarser flange or housing tolerances.
No residue formation
It does not clog narrow channels in pumps or hydraulic systems.
WRAS approved for drinking water
Direct contact with drinking water is permitted.

What is Permabond A136 used for?

Flange connections
Pumps, gearboxes, motor housings — flat metal sealing surfaces.
Housing cover
Hydraulic, pneumatic and pump housings.
Drinking water pumps
WRAS-approved — Pump flanges for drinking water applications.
Industrial flat gaskets
If classic flat gaskets were unsuitable due to wear or corrosion.
Replacement of stamped seals
Applied gasket instead of paper, cork or rubber flat gasket.

processing

1
Clean surfaces
Bonding surfaces must be clean, dry, and free of grease. Degrease with Permabond Cleaner A or a solvent (acetone, isopropanol). Rough surfaces (~25 µm) result in higher bond strength than polished surfaces.
2
Apply adhesive
Apply Permabond A136 directly from the bottle — for through holes, apply a stripe along the thread length; for blind holes, apply a few drops to the bottom. Do not touch the nozzle to metal surfaces (this will cause premature hardening in the bottle).
3
assembling components
Insert the screws and tighten them to the required torque. For shaft-hub fits, assemble the components before the adhesive begins to cure.
4
Allow to harden
Anaerobic curing begins in the absence of air and in contact with metal. Handling strength is typically achieved after 15 minutes, functional strength after 1 hour, and full strength after 24 hours at 23 °C.
5
Accelerate curing (optional)
Permabond A905 activator can be used on inactive surfaces (stainless steel, zinc, aluminum) or at low temperatures — applied to one adhesive surface, allowed to evaporate, then adhesive applied to the other side.

Important instructions

Not suitable for / Important notes
Curing requires metal-to-metal contact (anaerobic). For inactive surfaces, use A905 activator. Not for contact with oxygen or vapor. Some thermoplastics may be affected.
storage
Store at 5 to 25 °C. Anaerobic adhesives lose their reactivity upon contact with metal — do not touch the tip of the bottle to metal surfaces, do not pour the adhesive back into the bottle.

Frequently asked questions about Permabond A136

Practical application and design questions — answered by SILITECH.

Permabond A136 is a single-component, anaerobic acrylic sealant with a paste-like consistency and viscosity, capable of filling gaps up to 0.5 mm. It provides anaerobic surface and flange sealing – metal-to-metal contact, no shrinkage, and is WRAS approved. Anaerobic adhesives cure in the absence of air and in contact with metal – ideal for tight-tolerance metallic joints.

Anaerobic adhesives like Permabond A136 remain liquid in the bottle (due to contact with air and oxygen) and only begin to harden after bonding under anaerobic conditions and metal-to-metal contact. Curing starts at the metal surface and progresses into the bond gap. The product cures quickly on steel and copper; on stainless steel and zinc, the Permabond A905 activator may be beneficial.

Mechanical separation — surface seals are separated by lifting or sliding the components sideways. Slight heating can facilitate separation.

Permabond A136 is approved according to WRAS drinking water regulations . These certifications qualify the product for the specified applications — such as direct contact with drinking water in the case of WRAS and KTW approvals.

Permabond A136 typically reaches handling strength after 15 minutes and functional strength after 1 hour at 23 °C on M10 steel. Final strength is reached after 24 hours. On inactive surfaces (stainless steel, zinc) or at low temperatures, the curing time is extended—Permabond A905 activator accelerates the process.

Permabond A136 is a surface and flange gasket (paste consistency, viscosity 500,000 mPa·s, 0.5 mm gap filling, 10 N·m breakaway torque). Permabond MH196 is a red gasket maker (paste consistency 500,000 mPa·s, 0.5 mm gap filling, 20 N·m breakaway torque) — an anaerobic red surface gasket. Both belong to the anaerobic Permabond A series.

The choice depends on the application: Permabond A136 (surface and flange gasket); Permabond MH196 (red gasketmaker); Permabond A129 (pipe sealant gel); Permabond A1058 (pipe sealant paste). For inactive surfaces (stainless steel, zinc, aluminum), Permabond A905 activator should also be used to accelerate curing.
