PERMABOND ET538
PERMABOND ET538
Permabond · Permabond Engineering Adhesives Ltd ·

Permabond ET538 is a high-strength 2K epoxy with an exceptionally long pot life — designed for large-area structural bonding and complex component assemblies where standard epoxies cure too quickly.

With a pot life of 120–150 minutes, ET538 is the longest-lasting 2K epoxy in the ET series — ideal for plant engineering, shipbuilding, wind turbine rotor blades and other large-area structural bonding applications that need to be processed over long distances.

LONG CUPING TIME

Very long pot life of 120–150 minutes — the choice for large-area structural bonding, complex multi-component assembly, or high-volume production with long mixing cycles. High final strength of 25–30 N/mm² steel.

Processing

1
Clean surfaces
Bonding surfaces must be clean, dry, and free of grease. Degrease with Permabond Cleaner A or a solvent (acetone, isopropanol). Lightly sand aluminum and copper to remove oxide layers.
2
Mix components A + B
For twin cartridges: attach mixing nozzle, press evenly (1:1 by volume mixing ratio). For larger containers: weigh resin and hardener in the correct ratio and mix thoroughly until no streaks are visible. Avoid air entrapment.
3
Apply adhesive + join components
Apply the mixed adhesive to a bonding surface within the pot life (120–150 minutes @ 23 °C). Join the components with sufficient pressure to ensure the adhesive is distributed over the entire bonding surface.
4
Fix components during curing
Use a clamping device or clamp to ensure the components do not move during curing. Wait for handling strength and functional strength according to the TDS.
5
Full cure at room temperature
Final strength is typically achieved after 24 hours at 23 °C. Increasing the temperature by 8 °C halves the curing time; lower temperatures slow down the process. If necessary, optionally post-cure at 60–80 °C for maximum strength.

Important Notes

Important Notes
Pot life depends on the mixing quantity — larger quantities harden faster (exothermic). Fix components in position before hardening.
Storage
Store at 5 to 25 °C. Keep 2K epoxy components in closed packaging — especially protect the hardener from moisture.

Frequently asked questions about Permabond ET 538

Practical application and design questions — answered by SILITECH.

High-strength 2-component epoxy with a very long pot life — 120–150 minutes for large-area structural bonding. The 2-component epoxy is mixed in a 1:1 volume ratio and offers a pot life of 120–150 minutes @ 23 °C.

Mix both components in a 1:1 ratio by volume — using a mixing nozzle for dual cartridges, weigh precisely for larger containers. Apply within the pot life (120–150 minutes @ 23 °C) and join components. Full curing typically occurs after — at room temperature.

The pot life of Permabond ET538 is typically 120–150 minutes at 23 °C. Higher temperatures shorten, lower temperatures lengthen the pot life. Mixing quantities above approximately 100 g may gel more quickly due to an exothermic reaction.

Permabond ET538 bonds reliably to: steel: 25–30 N/mm²; carbon fiber: 20–24 N/mm². For thermoplastic substrates, test compatibility before series production.

Permabond ET538 does not have specific industry-specific approvals such as EU 10/2011 (food), UL94 (fire protection), or Boeing/Airbus (aerospace). For general industrial applications, the product is approved according to Permabond standards.

Permabond ET538 is a high-strength, two-component epoxy with a very long pot life (120–150 min) — for complex, large parts (1:1 volume mix, 120–150 minutes @ 23 °C pot life). Permabond ET514 is standard (1:1, 30–50 min pot life) — short pot life.

From the Permabond 2K epoxy range, select according to application, mixing ratio, and strength requirements: Permabond ET538 (High-strength 2K epoxy with very long pot life (120–150 min)); Permabond ET514 (Standard); Permabond ET536 (High-strength medium); Permabond ET540 (High-strength 2:1). For aerospace applications, see ET515 (Aircraft Seat Trays); for food applications, see ET5162 (EU 10/2011 + FDA); for thermal conductivity/fire protection, see ET5441 (UL94-V0).
