Permabond HM163 is a high-strength, medium-viscosity anaerobic shaft-hub adhesive — for highly stressed cylindrical fits that are machined in a vertical position or with coarser tolerances.

With a viscosity of 3,500 mPa·s, HM163 lies between the low-viscosity HM162 (1,000 mPa·s) and the HM165 paste (25,000 mPa·s). The higher viscosity ensures that the adhesive remains in place even on vertical shaft-hub fits, without dripping.

With a shear strength of 28 MPa and a breakaway strength of 30 N·m / 55 N·m, HM163 is close to the top value of HM162 — the choice when standard geometry and simple order logistics are more important than the very highest strength grade.

APPLICATION PROFILE

High-strength shaft-hub adhesive in medium viscosity — its superior consistency ensures it remains in place even in vertical or overhead fits. 28 MPa shear strength for demanding bonding applications.

Vibration and corrosion resistant
Secures dynamically stressed connections.

What is Permabond HM163 used for?

Vertical shaft-hub fits
Medium viscosity consistency, does not drip.
Bearings and bushings for heavy industry
Highly stressed cylindrical fits.
Standard shaft-hub bonding
If HM162 were too thin.
Drive components with torque transmission
Gears, pulleys.
Machine and plant assembly
When maximum strength is not essential, but high viscosity is required.

processing

1
Clean surfaces
Bonding surfaces must be clean, dry, and free of grease. Degrease with Permabond Cleaner A or a solvent (acetone, isopropanol). Rough surfaces (~25 µm) result in higher bond strength than polished surfaces.
2
Apply adhesive
Apply Permabond HM163 directly from the bottle — for through holes, apply a stripe along the thread length; for blind holes, apply a few drops to the bottom. Do not touch the nozzle to metal surfaces (this will cause premature hardening in the bottle).
3
assembling components
Insert the screws and tighten them to the required torque. For shaft-hub fits, assemble the components before the adhesive begins to cure.
4
Allow to harden
Anaerobic curing begins in the absence of air and in contact with metal. Handling strength is typically achieved after 15 minutes, functional strength after 1 hour, and full strength after 24 hours at 23 °C.
5
Accelerate curing (optional)
Permabond A905 activator can be used on inactive surfaces (stainless steel, zinc, aluminum) or at low temperatures — applied to one adhesive surface, allowed to evaporate, then adhesive applied to the other side.

Important instructions

Not suitable for / Important notes
Disassembly typically requires heating. For inactive surfaces, use A905 activator.
storage
Store at 5 to 25 °C. Anaerobic adhesives lose their reactivity upon contact with metal — do not touch the tip of the bottle to metal surfaces, do not pour the adhesive back into the bottle.

Frequently asked questions about Permabond HM163

Practical application and design questions — answered by SILITECH.

Permabond HM163 is an anaerobic acrylic adhesive with a viscosity of 3,500 mPa·s and a gap-filling capacity of up to 0.2 mm. This high-strength, medium-viscosity shaft-hub adhesive boasts a shear strength of 28 MPa and is designed for vertical fits. Anaerobic adhesives cure in the absence of air and metal-to-metal contact, making them ideal for tight-tolerance metal-to-metal bonds.

Anaerobic adhesives like Permabond HM163 remain liquid in the bottle (due to contact with air and oxygen) and only begin to harden after bonding under anaerobic conditions and metal-to-metal contact. Curing starts at the metal surface and progresses into the bond gap. The product cures quickly on steel and copper; on stainless steel and zinc, the Permabond A905 activator may be beneficial.

Yes, with tools — Permabond HM163 is medium-strength (30 N·m breakaway torque) and can be loosened with standard tools. If necessary, the bond can be gently heated to facilitate disassembly.

Permabond HM163 does not have specific industry approvals such as WRAS or KTW (drinking water). For general industrial applications, the product is approved according to Permabond's internal specifications; however, product-specific testing prior to series production is recommended.

Permabond HM163 typically reaches handling strength after 15 minutes and functional strength after 1 hour at 23 °C on M10 steel. Final strength is reached after 24 hours. On inactive surfaces (stainless steel, zinc) or at low temperatures, the curing time is extended—Permabond A905 activator accelerates the process.

Permabond HM163 is a high-strength, medium-viscosity shaft-hub adhesive (3,500 mPa·s viscosity, 0.2 mm gap filling, 30 N·m breakaway torque). Permabond HM162 is a high-strength, low-viscosity adhesive (1,000 mPa·s, 0.2 mm gap filling, 32 N·m breakaway torque) – offering the highest strength. Both belong to the anaerobic Permabond A series.

The choice depends on the application: Permabond HM163 (high-strength, medium-viscosity shaft-hub adhesive); Permabond HM162 (high-strength, low-viscosity); Permabond HM165 (high-strength paste); Permabond A1042 (high-strength, fast-curing). For inactive surfaces (stainless steel, zinc, aluminum) Permabond A905 activator be used to accelerate curing.
