Permabond TA439 is a 10:1 MMA structural adhesive — the industrial standard variant of the no-mix concept for high-stress bonding applications without aerospace requirements.

With a 10:1 mixing ratio, TA439 is structurally comparable to the aerospace TA4246 — the same no-mix logic with adhesive and initiator applied separately. It lacks Boeing/Airbus approvals, making it more cost-effective for purely industrial applications.

APPLICATION PROFILE

MMA structural adhesive in a 10:1 ratio — same no-mix approach as TA4246, without aerospace approval. The cost-effective all-round choice for industrial structural bonding.

Processing

1
Clean surfaces
Prepare bonding surfaces clean, dry, and free of grease — degrease with Permabond Cleaner A. Lightly sand aluminum and copper to remove the oxide layer.
2
Apply initiator to one bonding surface
Apply Permabond Initiator (46 for TA4246, 41 for TA435/TA437/TA436) thinly and evenly to one of the two bonding surfaces. Allow the initiator to flash off — surface life of up to 2 hours.
3
Apply adhesive to the opposite side
Apply Permabond TA439 to the UNTREATED bonding surface. Never mix adhesive and initiator directly — this will cause premature curing in the bottle.
4
Joining components
Fix and join the components immediately, at the latest within 2 hours after applying the initiator. Apply pressure — the adhesive spreads thinly and evenly.
5
Curing at room temperature
Handling strength typically after 2–10 minutes, functional strength after 15–30 minutes, final strength after 24 hours at 23 °C. Heat accelerates curing.

Important Notes

Important Notes
Requires Permabond initiator (typically initiator 41 or similar). Store at 2–7 °C.
Storage
Store at 2 to 7 °C (adhesive). Store initiator separately in original packaging. Never mix adhesive and initiator directly — protect adhesive from light exposure.

Frequently asked questions about Permabond TA439

Practical application and design questions — answered by SILITECH.

MMA structural adhesive 10:1 — cost-effective alternative to TA4246, general industrial bonding.

TA series MMA structural adhesives typically operate using a no-mix process: initiator on one surface, adhesive on the other—upon joining, the initiator activates the adhesive. Mixing ratio: 10:1 by volume. Handling strength after 2–10 minutes, final strength after 24 hours at 23 °C.

MMA structural adhesives (methyl methacrylate) offer higher impact and peel strength than classic 2K epoxies — important for dynamically loaded bonds. The no-mix processing with a separate initiator eliminates the pot life limitation. Cure time is typically faster (minutes instead of hours).

Permabond TA439 bonds reliably: Steel: 20–25 N/mm². Substrate failure is common with polycarbonate and PVC (bond stronger than material).

Permabond TA439 does not have specific aerospace approvals like TA4246 (Boeing/Airbus). For industrial applications without aerospace requirements, the product is approved according to Permabond standards.

Permabond TA439 is a 10:1 MMA structural adhesive — for all-round applications (10:1 volume mix). Permabond TA 4246 is a 10:1 aerospace adhesive — approved for Boeing and Airbus.

From the Permabond MMA range: Permabond TA439 (MMA structural adhesive 10:1 — all-round application); Permabond TA4246 (Aerospace 10:1); Permabond TA436 (Toughened Acrylic); Permabond TA4200 (1:1 standard). For premium aerospace applications, see TA4246 (Boeing and Airbus approved). For maximum industrial strength without the aerospace surcharge, see TA452.
