PERMABOND TA 4246
PERMABOND TA 4246
Permabond · Permabond Engineering Adhesives Ltd · SKU 49-4246.KT.G310

Permabond TA4246 is a premium aerospace MMA structural adhesive with dual approval (Boeing HMS 16-1226 + Airbus IP510-04-036-01) — the adhesive replacement for rivets and welding in weight-critical structures with the highest peel and impact strength requirements.

In the no-mix process, TA4246 is applied to one bonding surface, and Permabond Initiator 46 to the other—when joined, the initiator activates the adhesive. The effective mixing ratio is 10:1; no mixing is required, and there is no pot life limitation.

With a steel shear strength of 33–35 N/mm², a peel strength of 150–180 N/25 mm, and an impact strength of 50–60 kJ/m², TA4246 is one of the strongest structural adhesives in the Permabond family. Bonding polycarbonate, PVC, ABS, glass, and GRP leads to substrate failure—the bond is stronger than the material. Aerospace standard for seat, floor, and structural components.

PREMIUM AEROSPACE APPROVAL

Boeing HMS 16-1226 Rev C + Airbus IP510-04-036-01 — Permabond TA4246 is approved according to the two most important global aerospace structural adhesive specifications. It replaces riveting and welding for weight-saving, durable bonds with the highest peel and impact strength (150–180 N/25 mm peel resistance, 50–60 kJ/m² impact).

processing

1
Clean surfaces
Prepare bonding surfaces to be clean, dry, and free of grease — degrease with Permabond Cleaner A. Lightly sand aluminum and copper to remove oxide layers.
2
Apply the initiator to an adhesive surface
Apply Permabond Initiator (46 for TA4246, 41 for TA435/TA437/TA436) thinly and evenly to one of the two bonding surfaces. Allow the initiator to dry – bond life on the surface is up to 2 hours.
3
Apply adhesive to the opposite side
Apply Permabond TA 4246 to the UNTREATED bonding surface. Never mix adhesive and initiator directly — this will cause premature curing in the bottle.
4
assembling components
Fix and join the components immediately, or at the latest within 2 hours of applying the initiator. Apply pressure – the adhesive will spread thinly and evenly.
5
Curing at room temperature
Handling strength is typically achieved after 2–10 minutes, functional strength after 15–30 minutes, and final strength after 24 hours at 23 °C. Exposure to heat accelerates the curing process.

Important instructions

Important instructions
TA4246 requires Permabond Initiator 46 for curing — sold separately or as a package TA4246 + Initiator 46. Apply the initiator before TA4246 (surface life up to 2 hours). Degrease surfaces before bonding.
storage
Store adhesive at 2 to 7 °C. Keep initiator separate in its original packaging. Never mix adhesive and initiator directly — protect adhesive from light.

Frequently asked questions about Permabond TA 4246

Practical application and design questions — answered by SILITECH.

Premium aerospace structural adhesive — Boeing HMS 16-1226 + Airbus IP510-04-036-01, replaces rivets and welding.

TA series MMA structural adhesives typically operate using a no-mix process: initiator on one surface, adhesive on the other—upon joining, the initiator activates the adhesive. Mixing ratio: 10:1 parts by volume (with initiator 46). Handling strength after 2–10 minutes, final strength after 24 hours at 23 °C.

MMA (methyl methacrylate) structural adhesives offer higher impact and peel strength than conventional two-component epoxies—important for dynamically stressed bonds. The no-mix application with a separate initiator eliminates pot life limitations. Curing time is typically faster (minutes instead of hours).

Permabond TA 4246 reliably bonds: Steel: 33–35 N/mm²; Aluminum: 20–30 N/mm²; Polycarbonate: 19 N/mm² (substrate failure); PVC: 19 N/mm² (substrate failure); ABS: 12 N/mm² (substrate failure); Glass: 16 N/mm² (substrate failure). Substrate failure is common with polycarbonate and PVC (bond stronger than material).

Permabond TA 4246 is approved according to: Airbus IP510-04-036-01, Boeing HMS 16-1226 Rev C.Compliance letters and detailed certificates are available from Permabond/SILITECH.

Permabond TA 4246 is an aerospace structural adhesive MMA — Boeing + Airbus approved (10:1 volume parts (with Initiator 46) mix). Permabond TA439 is an MMA structural adhesive (10:1) — lower strength, without aerospace approval.

From the Permabond MMA range: Permabond TA 4246 (Aerospace structural adhesive MMA — Boeing + Airbus approved); Permabond TA439 (MMA structural adhesive); Permabond TA4200 (1:1 structural adhesive); Permabond TA452 (Toughened Acrylic). For aerospace premium, see TA4246 (Boeing + Airbus approved). For highest industrial strength without the aerospace surcharge, see TA452.
