Activators, primers, and cleaners. Surface preparation for secure bonding

Activators, primers, and cleaners significantly influence the quality of any adhesive bond. Surface preparation is not an accessory, but a separate process step: it improves adhesion, reduces curing times, and increases reproducibility in series production.

The three product groups

Cleaners and degreasers remove oils, greases, and release agent residues before bonding. Activators accelerate curing, for example, with cyanoacrylates on passive surfaces or with anaerobic adhesives on stainless steel and coated parts. Primers and adhesion promoters enable bonding on difficult substrates such as PE, PP, or other low-energy plastics.

What matters when making your selection

The activator and primer must be compatible with the adhesive technology and substrate; furthermore, the drying times and processing windows specified in the data sheet must be observed. We recommend testing the entire process on the original substrate.
