Product Description

Permabond A1042 is a fast-curing, medium-strength, anaerobic threadlocker with lubricating properties — designed for locking applications such as spring washers, cotter pins and bolted joints that require fast assembly and vibration-resistant locking.

Unlike standard threadlockers, A1042 cures to handling strength in just 5 minutes and to functional strength after 30 minutes — three times faster than A011 or A113. This accelerates line cycle times in series assembly.

The thixotropic consistency (8,000 mPa·s @ 2 rpm) prevents dripping from vertical threads. Its lubricating properties facilitate assembly—the screw can be tightened evenly, resulting in reproducible preload forces. With a breakaway torque of 16 N·m and a tightening torque of 8 N·m, A1042 falls within the classic medium-strength range.

APPLICATION PROFILE

Fast-curing, medium-strength threadlocker with lubricating properties — Permabond A1042 simplifies assembly, cures to handling strength in just 5 minutes, and is especially suitable for locking fasteners such as spring washers and cotter pins. WRAS-approved for use in drinking water.

Processing

1
Clean surfaces
Bonding surfaces must be clean, dry, and free of grease. Degrease with Permabond Cleaner A or a solvent (acetone, isopropanol). Rough surfaces (~25 µm) result in higher bond strength than polished ones.
2
Apply adhesive
Apply Permabond A1042 directly from the bottle — for through holes, apply a stripe along the thread length; for blind holes, apply a few drops to the bottom. Do not touch the tip to metal surfaces (this will cause premature hardening in the bottle).
3
Joining components
Insert the screws and tighten to the desired torque. For shaft-hub fits, assemble the components before the adhesive begins to cure.
4
Allow to cure
Anaerobic curing begins in the absence of air and upon contact with metal. Handling strength is typically achieved after 15 minutes, functional strength after 1 hour, and full strength after 24 hours at 23 °C.
5
Accelerate curing (optional)
On inactive surfaces (stainless steel, zinc, aluminum) or at low temperatures, Permabond A905 activator can be used — apply to one bonding surface, allow to flash off, then apply adhesive to the other side.

Important Notes

Not suitable for / Important notes
Metal-to-metal contact (anaerobic) is required for curing. For inactive surfaces (zinc, stainless steel), use Permabond A905 activator. Not for contact with oxygen or vapor.
Storage
Store at 5 to 25 °C. Anaerobic adhesives lose their reactivity upon contact with metal — do not touch the tip of the bottle to metal surfaces, and do not pour adhesive back into the bottle.

Frequently asked questions about Permabond A1042

Practical application and design questions — answered by SILITECH.

Permabond A1042 is a single-component acrylic (anaerobic) adhesive with a viscosity of 8,000 mPa·s @ 2 rpm / 1,700 mPa·s @ 20 rpm (thixotropic) and gap filling up to 0.12 mm. This fast-curing threadlocker with lubricating properties is ideal for spring washers, cotter pins, and locking fasteners. Anaerobic adhesives cure in the absence of air and in contact with metal—ideal for tight tolerance metal-to-metal bonding.

Anaerobic adhesives like Permabond A1042 remain liquid in the bottle (due to contact with air and oxygen) and only begin to harden after bonding under anaerobic conditions and metal-to-metal contact. Curing starts at the metal surface and progresses into the bond gap. The product cures quickly on steel and copper; on stainless steel and zinc, the Permabond A905 activator may be beneficial.

Yes, with tools — Permabond A1042 is medium-strength (16 N·m breakaway torque) and can be loosened with standard tools. If necessary, the bond can be gently heated to facilitate disassembly.

Permabond A1042 is approved according to WRAS drinking water regulations . These certifications qualify the product for the specified applications — such as direct contact with drinking water in the case of WRAS and KTW approvals.

Permabond A1042 typically reaches handling strength after 15 minutes and functional strength after 1 hour at 23 °C on M10 steel. Final strength is reached after 24 hours. On inactive surfaces (stainless steel, zinc) or at low temperatures, the curing time is extended—Permabond A905 activator accelerates the process.

Permabond A1042 is a medium-strength, fast-curing threadlocker with lubricating properties (8,000 mPa·s @ 2 rpm / 1,700 mPa·s @ 20 rpm (thixotropic) viscosity, 0.12 mm gap filling, 16 N·m breakaway torque). Permabond A118 is a medium-strength standard threadlocker (500 mPa·s, 0.12 mm gap filling, 12 N·m breakaway torque) — low viscosity, slower curing. Both belong to the anaerobic Permabond A series.

The choice depends on the application: Permabond A1042 (medium-strength, fast-curing threadlocker with lubricating effect); Permabond A118 (standard medium-strength); Permabond A130 (medium-strength WRAS+KTW); Permabond HM162 (universal high-strength). For inactive surfaces (stainless steel, zinc, aluminum), Permabond A905 activator be used to accelerate curing.
