PERMABOND 731 Clear
Permabond · Permabond Engineering Adhesives Ltd · SKU 49-731.FL

Permabond 731 Clear is a toughened ethyl cyanoacrylate adhesive that has been specifically optimized to withstand impact and peel stress — the right choice when classic superglues would fail due to brittle fracture.

With a viscosity of 150 mPa·s, 731 falls within the medium viscosity range. The longer curing time on steel (under 30 seconds) allows for precise alignment of the components before the bond is set—on aluminum, the correction window extends to 120 to 180 seconds.

The toughened formulation delivers peel resistances of 40–60 N/25 mm and impact strength of 5–10 kJ/m² (ASTM D-950) — values that a standard ethyl CA such as 102 or 791 does not achieve. On steel, peak shear strength values of up to 30 N/mm² are achieved. The ISO 10993-5 cytotoxicity test further confirms biocompatibility.

SPECIAL FEATURE

Toughened and elasticized — developed for applications requiring impact and peel stress. The peel resistance of 40–60 N/25 mm and the impact strength of 5–10 kJ/m² are significantly higher than standard cyanoacrylates. Cytotoxicity tested according to ISO 10993-5.

General industrial assembly
With a longer correction time for precise alignment — for example in jig and fixture construction.

processing

1
Clean surfaces
Bonding surfaces must be clean, dry, and free of grease. Degrease with acetone or isopropanol. Lightly sand aluminum, copper, and their alloys to remove the oxide layer.
2
Use adhesive sparingly
Apply Permabond 731 Clear only drop by drop to an adhesive surface — the thin layer is crucial for rapid curing.
3
assembling components
Quickly and correctly align the parts. Apply enough pressure so that the adhesive spreads into a thin film.
4
Secure until firmly in place
Do not disturb or realign until handling strength is reached (typically a few seconds to one minute, depending on the substrate). Final strength is reached after 24 hours.
5
Remove adhesive residue
Excess adhesive can be removed with Permabond CA Solvent 2, nitromethane or acetone.

Frequently asked questions about Permabond 731 Clear

Practical application and design questions — answered by SILITECH.

Permabond 731 Clear is a tough-elastic ethyl cyanoacrylate superglue with a viscosity of 150 mPa·s and a maximum gap filling capacity of 0.15 mm. This tough-elastic cyanoacrylate adhesive is impact and peel resistant and biocompatible.

Permabond 731 Clear reliably bonds steel (24–30 N/mm²), aluminum (13–15 N/mm²), as well as Buna-N rubber and similar elastomers. For polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE), PTFE, and silicone, pretreatment with Permabond Polyolefin Primer (POP) is required.

Permabond 731 Clear has cytotoxicity testing according to ISO 10993-5 — qualified for demanding industrial applications.

Permabond 731 Clear reaches handling strength on steel in <30 s. Other typical curing times: 120–180 s (aluminum), 15–20 s (Buna N), 30–45 s (ABS). The final strength of 24–30 N/mm² (steel) is reached after 24 hours. Temperature, humidity, and substrate affect the curing rate.

Permabond 731 Clear offers a viscosity of 150 mPa·s, a gap filling capacity of 0.15 mm, and a shear strength of 24–30 N/mm² on steel. Permabond 735 has a viscosity of 100–200 mPa·s, a gap filling capacity of 0.15 mm, and a shear strength of 24–30 N/mm² on steel (black instead of colorless). Both utilize an ethyl cyanoacrylate (toughened) base (or a related cyanoacrylate variant).

Permabond 731 Clear should be stored unopened refrigerated at 2 to 7 °C and is stable until the printed expiration date. Allow the bottle to warm to room temperature before opening—this prevents condensation inside, which would reduce its shelf life. Opened bottles remain functional for several months if stored correctly, although the curing rate may decrease over time. We recommend performing a test bond to check reactivity before critical production applications.

From the Permabond cyanoacrylate range, select according to viscosity and special properties: Permabond 731 Clear (150 mPa·s, 0.15 mm gap width, kJ/m² impact resistant); Permabond 735 (100–200 mPa·s, 0.15 mm, black instead of colorless); Permabond 737MM (2,000–4,000 mPa·s, 0.5 mm, paste, 0.5 mm gap, black); Permabond 792 (60–125 mPa·s, 0.15 mm, standard without toughening). For polypropylene, polyethylene, PTFE, and silicone, pretreatment with Permabond Polyolefin Primer (POP) is always required.
