Permabond MH196 is an anaerobic gasket maker in paste form — designed to form formed-in-situ gaskets between metallic flanges, as a replacement for classic paper, cork or rubber gaskets.

Unlike conventional threadlockers or shaft-hub adhesives, MH196 is a pure surface sealant—it is applied to one of the flange sealing surfaces and, when the components are joined, forms a custom-fit seal within the gap geometry. The paste consistency (500,000 mPa·s) remains precisely where it is applied.

MH196 replaces pre-cut flat gaskets made of paper, cork or rubber — with the advantages: no need to stock different gasket shapes, no wear and tear as with rubber gaskets, no creep, full-surface pressure distribution and corrosion protection on the flange contact surfaces.

APPLICATION PROFILE

Anaerobic gasketmaker — formed-in-situ surface gasket — Permabond MH196 replaces conventional flat gaskets made of paper, cork, or rubber. When the flanges are joined, the gasket forms a precise fit within the gap geometry, thus preventing the wear and creep of conventional gaskets.

Repair instead of seal replacement
When original seals are no longer available.
Industrial flat gaskets
Machine and apparatus construction with metal flanges.

processing

1
Clean surfaces
Bonding surfaces must be clean, dry, and free of grease. Degrease with Permabond Cleaner A or a solvent (acetone, isopropanol). Rough surfaces (~25 µm) result in higher bond strength than polished surfaces.
2
Apply adhesive
Apply Permabond MH196 directly from the bottle — for through holes, apply a stripe along the thread length; for blind holes, apply a few drops to the bottom. Do not touch the tip to metal surfaces (this will cause premature hardening in the bottle).
3
Joining components
Insert the screws and tighten them to the required torque. For shaft-hub fits, assemble the components before the adhesive begins to cure.
4
Allow to harden
Anaerobic curing begins in the absence of air and in contact with metal. Handling strength is typically achieved after 15 minutes, functional strength after 1 hour, and full strength after 24 hours at 23 °C.
5
Accelerate curing (optional)
Permabond A905 activator can be used on inactive surfaces (stainless steel, zinc, aluminum) or at low temperatures — applied to one adhesive surface, allowed to evaporate, then adhesive applied to the other side.

Important instructions

Not suitable for / Important notes
Curing requires metal-to-metal contact (anaerobic). For inactive surfaces (zinc, stainless steel), use A905 activator. Not for contact with oxygen or vapor. Some thermoplastics may be affected.
storage
Store at 5 to 25 °C. Anaerobic adhesives lose their reactivity upon contact with metal — do not touch the tip of the bottle to metal surfaces, do not pour the adhesive back into the bottle.

Frequently asked questions about Permabond MH196

Practical application and design questions — answered by SILITECH.

Permabond MH196 is an anaerobic acrylic sealant with a viscosity of 500,000 mPa·s @ 2 rpm (paste) and a gap-filling capacity of up to 0.5 mm. It is an anaerobic surface gasket—formed-in-situ gaskets between metallic flanges—replacing conventional flat gaskets. Anaerobic adhesives cure in the absence of air and in contact with metal—ideal for tight-tolerance metallic joints.

Anaerobic adhesives like Permabond MH196 remain liquid in the bottle (due to contact with air and oxygen) and only begin to harden after bonding under anaerobic conditions and metal-to-metal contact. Curing starts at the metal surface and progresses into the bond gap. The product cures quickly on steel and copper; on stainless steel and zinc, the Permabond A905 activator may be beneficial.

Mechanical separation — surface seals are separated by lifting or sliding the components sideways. Slight heating can facilitate separation.

Permabond MH196 does not have specific industry approvals such as WRAS or KTW (drinking water). For general industrial applications, the product is approved according to Permabond's internal specifications; product-specific testing prior to series production is recommended.

Permabond MH196 typically reaches handling strength after 15 minutes and functional strength after 1 hour at 23 °C on M10 steel. Final strength is reached after 24 hours. On inactive surfaces (stainless steel, zinc) or at low temperatures, the curing time is extended—Permabond A905 activator accelerates the process.

Permabond MH196 is an anaerobic gasket maker — formed-in-situ (500,000 mPa·s @ 2 rpm (paste) viscosity, 0.5 mm gap filling, 20 N·m breakaway torque). Permabond A136 is an acrylic gasket maker (paste, 0.5 mm, 10 N·m breakaway torque) — an acrylic gasket maker with WRAS. Both belong to the anaerobic Permabond A series.

The choice depends on the application: Permabond MH196 (anaerobic gasket sealant – formed-in-situ); Permabond A136 (acrylic gasket sealant); Permabond A129 (pipe sealant gel); Permabond A1058 (pipe sealant paste). For inactive surfaces (stainless steel, zinc, aluminum) Permabond A905 activator be used to accelerate curing.
